The smart home industry continues to evolve at an incredible pace, with new technologies making homes more intuitive, comfortable and connected than ever before. To ensure we're always delivering the best possible solutions for our customers, Head of Automation Jeremy and Automation Technician Ken, both qualified Control4 installers, recently travelled to Auckland to attend the 2026 ADI APAC Expo.

Bringing together many of the world's leading smart home, networking, audio, security and automation manufacturers under one roof, the event provided a valuable opportunity to explore emerging technology, experience live demonstrations, speak directly with manufacturers and gain insight into where the industry is heading.

For ATL, events like this aren't simply about seeing the latest products—they're about investing in knowledge that helps us design smarter, more reliable and better integrated solutions for homes and businesses throughout Canterbury.

Why Ongoing Training Matters

Technology doesn't stand still—and neither do we.

As a Control4 Certified Showroom and smart home specialist, ATL is committed to continual learning. Meeting directly with manufacturers, attending technical training sessions and experiencing products firsthand gives our team a deeper understanding than simply reading specifications or watching online demonstrations.

It means we can confidently recommend products we've personally explored, understand how they integrate with existing systems, and stay informed about future developments before they become mainstream.

That knowledge ultimately benefits our customers, helping us deliver automation systems that are intuitive, reliable and designed around the way people actually live.

Hands-On With the Latest Control4 Technology

One of the highlights of the expo was spending time with the latest Control4 X4 operating system and the new Control4 T5 Touchscreen.

Control4 has long been recognised as one of the world's leading smart home automation platforms, allowing homeowners to control lighting, audio, video, climate, security, blinds and more through one intuitive interface.

The new X4 update introduces a noticeably cleaner, more modern user experience.

Jeremy and Ken were particularly impressed with the refinements to the interface.

"The new Control4 X4 update was a highlight. It was great to see the improvements in the user interface and overall user experience, making the system feel more modern, intuitive and easier for customers to interact with."

While many software updates happen behind the scenes, this release focuses heavily on improving everyday usability. Faster navigation, cleaner layouts and a more intuitive design make interacting with a smart home feel even more seamless.

For homeowners, that means spending less time learning technology—and more time enjoying it.

Smart Homes Continue to Become Smarter

One of the biggest themes throughout the expo wasn't a single product—it was integration.

Almost every manufacturer showcased products designed to communicate with one another, creating smarter, more personalised living environments.

Lighting, entertainment, climate control, security systems, networking and window furnishings are increasingly working together rather than operating independently.

That flexibility opens exciting opportunities for customised automation.

Ken’s biggest takeaway reflected exactly that.

"There are a lot more products available on the market that can integrate with Control4 than I realised. It shows how open and flexible the platform has become, giving us more options to create tailored smart home solutions for different customers."

This expanding ecosystem means homeowners no longer need to compromise when choosing products—they have more choice while still enjoying a fully integrated smart home experience.

A New Generation of Smart Lighting

Lighting has always played an important role in smart home automation, but one product particularly stood out —the new Yeelight Skylight system.

Rather than simply turning lights on and off, modern smart lighting is increasingly focused on improving wellbeing, comfort and atmosphere throughout the home.

The Yeelight Skylight creates a more natural lighting experience, helping spaces feel brighter, more open and more connected to natural daylight.

It's another example of how smart homes continue moving beyond convenience towards creating better living environments.

Electric Blinds Are Becoming Smarter Than Ever

Perhaps the technology attracting the most attention across the expo was automated window furnishings.

Electric blind motors have advanced significantly in recent years, becoming quieter, more energy efficient and easier to install.

One innovation that particularly impressed the team was a new battery-powered PoE (Power over Ethernet) electric blind motor.

Rather than requiring traditional power wiring, the motor features a built-in rechargeable battery that charges via a single Cat6 cable using PoE technology.

Using only around 3 watts while charging, it dramatically simplifies installation while maintaining a clean, integrated appearance.

Jeremy explains:

"It means you only need to run a single Cat6 cable to the window, making installation much simpler while still providing a clean, integrated smart home solution."

The technology also generated significant interest throughout the expo.

"The electric blind motors seemed to get a lot of attention. It was great to see how much the technology has improved, with quieter operation, better integration and more options for smart home control."

Given their growing popularity, electric blinds are something Jeremy would love to showcase within the ATL showroom.

Being able to experience them in person would allow customers to better understand how automation can improve comfort, privacy, energy efficiency and everyday convenience.

Premium Audio and Entertainment Continue to Evolve

Audio continues to play a major role in smart home design.

The expo showcased a range of premium indoor and outdoor entertainment solutions from brands including Sonos and Episode, demonstrating how integrated audio can become part of everyday living.

From discreet architectural speakers that disappear into ceilings and walls through to outdoor entertainment systems designed for patios and entertaining areas, the focus continues to be on delivering exceptional performance while blending seamlessly into modern homes.

Combined with platforms like Control4, homeowners can enjoy music throughout the entire house—or outdoors—with effortless control from a single interface.

Meeting the People Behind the Technology

One of the biggest advantages of attending industry events is the opportunity to speak directly with the people designing and supporting the products we install.

Rather than relying solely on product brochures, our team spent time discussing new technologies, future developments and integration possibilities with manufacturers and software partners.

Jeremy and Ken also attended CEDIA education sessions, gaining valuable insights into industry best practices and the future direction of smart home technology.

Those conversations help ensure ATL continues delivering solutions built on proven products, supported by strong manufacturer relationships and backed by current industry knowledge.

Bringing Innovation Back to Canterbury

The biggest value of attending events like the ADI APAC Expo isn't simply seeing new products—it's bringing those ideas home.

Every conversation, demonstration and training session helps our team better understand how technology can solve real-world problems for our customers.

Whether it's smarter lighting, simplified blind control, improved user interfaces or expanded integration options, these innovations all contribute to creating homes that are easier to live in, more energy efficient and more enjoyable every day.

By continually investing in training, manufacturer relationships and hands-on experience, ATL remains committed to delivering smart home solutions that aren't just current today—but ready for tomorrow.
